Ostheimer Wooden Toys: Interview and a Giveaway!

As many of you know, I was in Germany last week attending the International Toy Fair in Nuremberg.

Not only was I ecstatic to discover many wonderful new wooden toys and Waldorf dolls to introduce this year at Bella Luna Toys, but I was also fortunate to have the opportunity to meet with the presidents of several of the lines of European toys we carry, including Grimm’s Spiel & Holz, PlanToys, Käthe Kruse, HABA, and Ostheimer.

I had a long and wonderful visit with Wolfgang Schühle, the president of Ostheimer in Germany, and met Stephan Zech, the company’s current designer. I was able to share with them my love of Ostheimer figures and tell them about the joy they have brought my family over the last 20 years.

Wolfgang was able to share with me some of the history of the company, founded by Margarete Ostheimer in Stuttgart, Germany nearly 60 years ago. Fortunately, I was able to record some of my talk with Mr. Schühle and am happy to share it with you here!

I want to share my Ostheimer love with you, so Bella Luna Toys is giving away a set of these beloved wooden figures, perfect for a child’s Easter basket!

Set Includes:

  • 1 Sheep
  • 1 Sitting Rabbit
  • 1 Picking Brown Hen

We don’t have any but my children would really like them. We always admire them at local waldorf. I love the quality with each piece is made.

My son and I love playing with our small (but growing) collection of castle figures. The muted tones are so soothing and I love holding them. I have such a hard time choosing what we will get next: farm pieces? woodland creatures? But the set I covet most is Snow White and her dwarves.

Thanks for the video. I loved learning more about the company and the process.

What an amazing give away! We love the Ostheimer wooden figures so much. We started collecting them about a year ago. We give them to our three young children for every gift giving holiday. What I love most about them is that they are natural and open ended toys that encourage creativity. I love that young children can understand very easily how their toys were made because they were carved from wood and not manufactured from plastic which would be so very hard to explain to them. Thanks!

Does anyone else feel that Ostheimer toys seem to glow in your hands? Thank you for including the video. It is special to see the makers.

  • Reply Bridget February 13, 2013 at 7:25 am

Though our son is now almost 24, we all continue to love these little creatures. They find their way into so many places thru the year near bedsides, the dining table, the window sills, under the tree. We love them all, my personal favorites are the ponies, we have a herd of them often running through the house. And Sarah thanks, my computer skills are still very lacking, I would rather be playing with the Ostheimer with our neighbor Scarlet!

  • Reply Charity February 13, 2013 at 10:18 am

These are simply precious and beautifully crafted. It would be so difficult to name a favorite. My children would simply adore the farm animals and really any of the figures. I love to see toys like this. Thank you for always carrying such quality items!

Sarah, we are Catholic. So you imagine the joy I felt when I saw Blessed Mary and baby Jesus so beautifully made by Oshtheimer. I am extremely new to waldorf learning. What attracted me was how much Catholicism is celebrated through ritual. Thank you for putting the Mother and Child on sale. I will be purchasing them soon. Blessings!

We have the farm set, and my two boys (1 and 4) love the baby in his crib. He’s small, so he gets lost a lot, but we always find him. We don’t have any of these farm animals, though, so we would love to win this giveaway!
