I loved school but the first day was always traumatic, homeschooling my kids has kept that from happening to them!

I remember my first day at my new school after moving in K. My mom had assured me she would get to go in the classroom for a little bit, and then the principal wouldn’t let her. I had to sit between two boys at our little table. =) Such trauma!

ON THE FIRST DAY OF FIFTH GRADE, I MET A NEW BEST FRIEND. WE HAD SUCH A GREAT YEAR AND SO MANY GREAT MEMORIES.

I remember running to school with my friend, leaving my mom behind in the dust. Sorry, mom.

I can’t seem to remember a first day until middle school. It must have been so traumatic that I blocked it out. 😉

I always loved the first day of school. I was homeschooled and my mom wouldn’t let me even peek at my new books until the first day. She would wake up early and make a special breakfast for us and then we would dive right into memorizing Scripture, the Pledge of Allegiance, and then we would finally get to look at our new books. I was always so excited with all the new things I was going to get to learn.

I remember being worried about not knowing how to read before starting K lol

  • Reply Diana August 20, 2017 at 1:21 pm

I remember the nervous stomach and the clothing all set out. I would be a mixture of excited and scared and then the first day would come and a sadness would wash over you because summer was really over but a new adventure was about to begin.

I remember my first day in high school. It was so exciting and scary!

  • Reply Dana Schultz August 20, 2017 at 1:24 pm

I loved the smell of newly sharpened pencils and brand new crayons! All of the books lined up on the shelves waiting to be opened and read were like welcoming friends!

  • Reply Sarah R August 20, 2017 at 1:25 pm

Every first day of school my mom would take a picture of my brothers and I in our new clothes. It was the nicest and cleanest we looked all year.

  • Reply Sarah August 20, 2017 at 1:33 pm

On the first day of school, my mother dressed me in a beautiful floral dress and braided my hair. When I got into the classroom, our first project was to draw ourselves. I drove myself crazy trying to color every flower and detail! My patient teacher, Miss Schlossberg, put her hand on my shoulder and me it doesn’t have to be perfect. 🙂

The only first back to school day I remember is in 5th grade. My mom had just gotten remarried that summer and we started a new school. The first day, the teacher had us play a get to know you game that required you to remember the names and favorite hobby of the people in front of you. The others had gone to school together since K. And, of course, I was in the last row. It was quite traumatic when I couldn’t remember anyone but the first person. Still remember that bit to this day – Kay who liked roller skating. Horrible memory!

I remember the first day of fourth grade, switching to a school with uniforms. While all the other kids would complain about it, I always secretly loved my school uniform from that very first day.

That new school supply smell…still takes me back to many happy memories;). Thanks to all the great teachers out there!!!

My favorite back to school memory for this year was when the teachers at our newly opened Waldorf-inspired charter school sang to welcome our students and families into the new school at the welcome assembly! It resonated beautifully in the new space, and was soothing to parents and students alike!

I remember watching my daughter hop out of the car and run into school on her first day of kindergarten last year. She never looked back. I was so happy for her, and I hope that she continues to experience new adventures without looking back😊

I remember my first day of kinder. Excited to wear new clothes and to meet my teacher. I sat down & colored a school bus yellow. I wanted my mom to stay but she said she had to leave. My eyes filled with tears as a colored. Although I couldn’t have predicted it then it ended up being a lovely school year.

  • Reply Kathi Isenhour August 20, 2017 at 2:18 pm

I would always make a big breakfast for my kids and then worry all day til they came home and had had a great time!

  • Reply Julie R. August 20, 2017 at 2:18 pm

On the first day of school I always had to match with my best friend so from the rubber band in our hair down to our socks and shoes we surely had fun being twins and feeling like it was an exciting start to the school year 🙂

My grandchildren are home schooled. And all the supplies would enhance their experience.

On my first day of kindergarten my mother was unable to walk me to school because she was in the hospital having just given birth to my brother, so Mrs. Goodman, my friend Joanne’s mother, walked me to school. When the teacher said it was time to kiss our mothers good-bye, I started to cry and Mrs. Goodman said I could give her a kiss instead, which I did, but her cheek was so different from my own mother’s cheek (not sure why) that I still remember this more than 60 years later.

The smell of the vinyl notebooks covers that we wrapped ourselves in order to protect them from tear and wear. And the uniforms perfectly folded and ironed (I attended a Catholic school in Brazil). 🙂

I remember walking with all the neighbourhood kids and their parents to our local elementary school. It was such a fun way to kick off the new school year!

  • Reply Johanna Bryan August 20, 2017 at 3:11 pm

I remember the pause before entering the front door of my kindergarten…wearing my “petal dress” my mother had sewn me. I was excited, nervous and feeling so special & loved, yet shyly looking into the camera as my mom snapped a photo of my first day of school.

  • Reply Andrea G August 20, 2017 at 3:18 pm

On the first day of first grade I remember two things. One, was the name tag we had to have pinned to our shirts, it was huge. Two, was the old wasp nest the teacher hung in the classroom, I was so sure at least one wasp was still hiding in there!

  • Reply Elizabeth Root August 20, 2017 at 3:20 pm

I do remember back to school being fun and though I was shy the teachers were kind and I generally liked it! I’m glad I can homeschool my kids. Our slower mornings are nice.

I remember my first day in 3rd grade, the year my sibling started school with me. I felt so important climbing the huge flight of stairs with my sister hand-in-hand. I took her to her classroom and then departed for mine. I felt so grown up and ready for the year to begin.

I remember getting to pick out a new outfit at the store to wear for my first day. It was one of my favorite memories and now I get to do it with my own children.

I was homeschooled/unschooled so we never really had a first day of school haha everyday was a day to learn something!! And I still am haha! But my son will be officially starting homeschool in January! I can not wait for his official first day of school! We are waiting until January so I can finish gathering all the supplies and get our curriculum all laid out:)

I vividly remember getting to choose my special first day of school outfit with my Mom. It always made the start of school more exciting and made me feel more confident to get started with a new school year.

The memory of our first day back to homeschool is sitting down around our big desk and singing Humpy Dumpty together. It was a great moment for us.

I remember the soft fluff inside a new sweatshirt which stuck to the white shirt underneath and how they were never as nice after being washed 🙂

The first day of school… it was filled with so much hope. 😉 lol It was very exciting to begin our first official day of home schooling my daughter or first grade. I wish I had a memory of it that is distinct and thrilling, but I don’t. I just remember that fresh, good feeling that comes with a new beginning. 🙂

Unfortunately in seventh grade, I had the worst first day of school ever. I got lost, was reprimanded, lost a contact, and then got lost again on the walk home. First days are always nerve-wracking but thankfully they are just a single day. Here’s to getting through them and diving into the curriculum and learning!

  • Reply Cara August 20, 2017 at 6:45 pm

What a cool giveaway! I too remember my first day at a new school–fourth grade–and I too met my new best friend that day. The second day of school, she invited me to her birthday party!

I remember practicing writing my name before kindergarten and I actually remember breathing onto our sliding glass door and writing my name for the first time in the fogged up glass.

I remember riding my horse to the first day of my senior year in high school. I don’t remember why I did it, but she hung out in the ag barn until school was out.

I loved anticipating the start of a new school year. I especially remember the excitement in laying out my back-to-school outfit the day before (or several days before) while savoring the last moments of summer. Yes, there were jitters, but I felt comfort in knowing that teachers had been preparing a place for their students and preparations were being made to make re-entry as welcoming as possible. I guess this was a benefit of having two teachers at home as parents. : ) I could experience back-to-school from both teacher and student perspectives.

My little girl spent a good four months telling me repeatedly that first grade was going to be awful and there was nothing that could possibly make it even remotely bearable and everything would be terrible forever. When I walked down to pick her up after the first day, she told, “It wasn’t too bad. I concentrated for the first time. I actually kind of like it!” I’ll take it.

I was so excited for my fist day of school that I packed my new backpack full of books and school supplies and carried them proudly to school. I wanted to be just like my big brother. I was only 3 and could barely make it up the steps and inside but I did it with a beaming smile.

  • Reply Bethany Kingsley August 20, 2017 at 9:07 pm

I’m pretty sure I blacked them all out; I can’t remember a single first day of school. Oh, wait, I remember switching schools mid-year and having a first day of 6th grade. I heard rumors of a satanic sacrifice. Perhaps, it wasn’t the BEST first day at a new place, but it was memorable!
